Catch the Sun - Victory explores the Hawai'an legend of Maui

Posted on May 04 2017

We didn't go there to slap surf stickers on telephone poles. We didn't know exactly what we were about to do other than try capture and translate stories of Hawaiian mythology for a 40 year old surf brand. Our only contact is a photographer named Erik with a “k” and a drone videographer named Erik with a “k” that I found on Craigslist. The plan - explore, write, shoot pics and video for five days on Maui and celebrate the legends of the demi god Maui.

To give you a quick uptake and Hawai'ian mythology, it's pretty darn fascinating. The lead character is a demigod name Maui, the Hercules of Polynesia. The other amazing deal is that the stories and legends of Maui are shared throughout all of Polynesia stretching from the Hawaiian Islands to the Chatham Islands, New Zealand, Tonga, Fiji and as far as Peru. The stories and legends are beautiful and many of them were translated into family chants and ancient texts from the last Monarch on Hawaii Queen Lili’uokalani. Here’s a sampling from a legend of Maui the Fisherman:

“…Go hence to your father 'Tis there you find line and hook. This is the hook - Made fast to the heavens.”
