2014 Surf Race to Victory

Posted on September 14 2016

US SUP TOUR wrap up Huntington Beach Written by Rocky McKinnon The Michelob Ultra US SUP TOUR ended it’s 2014 year season at the historic Huntington Beach Pier. The HB Southside of the pier has seen many great competitions through the years and this final event that showcased the
stand up paddle Race to Victory (SUPCROSS) and stand up paddle surfing did not disappoint. Saturday featured SUPCROSS which is a fast paced and exciting form of standup paddle racing. Testing the skills of the racers by bringing them in and out of the surf zone. The men’s open race is always competitive bringing in competitors from different age ranges and experience. Coming out on top was Kieran Grant over Max Flemming 3rd place was Fisher Grant and 4th Myles
Blazer.
The Woman’s Pro was hotly contested all race long in the final. The surf playing the wild card factor. Mixing up the top 4 all race long. Coming out on top was Fiona Wylde 2nd Shae Fondy 3rd Candice Appleby 4th Halie Harrison. Honorable mention to our Open Womans winner Erika Benitez who raced with the pros in this event. The Men’s Pro was stacked with talent. The battle after the first lap was definitely going to come down to either Mo Freitas or Zane Schweitzer. Edging out the win was the competitor from Maui, Zane Schweitzer 2nd Mo Freitas 3rd Javier Jimenez 4th Fernando Stalla. Sunday was the day for the top stand-up paddle surfers to display their talent and showcase the latest in progressive sup surfing. An international field and tricky 2 to 4ft surf provided for some great performances and un-characteristic upsets. Going down early in the Mens Pro Division were Colin McPhillips and local favorite, and winner of our last event in Zuma, Daniel Hughes. A great battle ensued in the final between current number #1 in the world Caio Vaz and Mo Freitas. Both surfers matching the punchy Huntington Beach shorebreak with big powerful maneuvers. In the end Mo Freitas edged out Caio Vaz with a big frontside vertical crack off the lip to explosive closeout re-entry that sealed the victory for Mo. 3rd place was Deneil Alexis 4th Ian Vaz.
The Woman’s Pro event showcased some of the best woman in the world. The final was close. At times there was a 3 way battle for 1st place. But in the end it was local girl Sophia Bartlow who charged ahead for the victory. 2nd was Izzy Gomez 3rd Emmy Merril and rounding up the final in 4th was Tarryn Kyte.
